Everybody loves Halloween. What a good excuse to dress up in silly or scary costumes, throw a party or if that’s not your style – just stay home and watch scary movies while devouring mountains of candy.
There are different Halloween rituals for every person, but could a little bit of real money gambling be part of it?
Software developers seem to think so because every Halloween they pump out a ton of horror-themed offerings for punters worldwide to enjoy.
Theme
Kalamba Games is getting in on the action (real money gambling action, that is) with Blood Moon Express, a game that’s all about horror. But also multiplier wilds and extra spins.
Set in a derelict train station (and that’s a scary place no matter the season) the grid takes on a strange configuration in the 2-3-4-5-6-6 way. It’s essentially pyramid laid on its side, and on the pyramid are various symbols culled from the many horrific legends of the world.
Among them are a Jack O’Lantern, a werewolf, an Egyptian undead priest, and Dracula himself. They all appear to punters in their full stacked glory as they move from reel to reel.
The other symbols are typical horror accouterments – blood chalices, eyes of Horus, canine teeth, and a scythe.
Betting Options and Functions
Atypical for a Kalamba offering, this game does not come with their trademark HyperBet and HyperBonus systems.
Instead, there is a mission system, a masterstroke of gamification, in which punters can select a mission and reap the rewards once they fulfill it.
It boils down to collecting wilds and getting a bet multiplier once a certain number is collected. The multiplier wilds are worth more, of course. But there is a spin limit to achieve this, and if you fail the mission resets.
Special Features
So there’s a mission but what else is there in this horrific train wreck of a game? Note that since it’s Halloween, a horrific train wreck is a good thing.
Well, the already mentioned icons of horror stacked wilds don’t really like leaving the reels so they stay. That’s right, a full reel of wilds is guaranteed on every spin, with the stack moving along from the reel. Most of the time it will be just the x1 symbol, but occasionally the wilds with higher multipliers will show up too.
And of course…
…there are extra spins. Activated by three or more bonus scatters they also come with a cash prize as in most other games by this developer.
Just like there are missions in the base game, the extra spin mode has a twist of its own.
It’s called the accumulation symbol and it’s presented by the offering’s namesake – a blood moon. Collect three of these and instead of one wandering wild stack there will be two and you’ll also get two more spins. If you manage to collect six yet another wild stack will be added with another two spins.
The collection continues after that and each three collected symbols will give out a further two spins.
Our Take
The blood moon is a quite popular symbol for horror-themed games. Just ask game developer Yggdrasil who put out Blood Moon Wilds, also as part of the Halloween offering frenzy.
So, what does this game have that others don’t?
Primarily, the gamification with the missions. It’s a great touch and something we’re seeing more and more in titles. Apart from that, the extra spins mechanic is quite involved and engaging as well.
Definitely one of the top contenders, and an offering nobody should miss.
