Before all the fancy mobile games that come out in droves on the Play and App Store, there was only one king of mobile gaming.
Back when mobile phones had no internet connections and the screen color range was exactly one – grey, it was Snake that ruled the day.
Yes, this simple but oh-so-engaging game was on every phone back in the 90s and it delighted and regaled early mobile users with its super-addictive gameplay.
And now Gluck Games has decided to honor this monumental game with a slot treatment.
Theme
Taking into account the source material, it’s fitting that the developer has chosen to present this game as a mobile-first offering.
While it is playable on desktop, of course, the game area is presented in a vertical orientation. A very nice touch is that the board and the little screen on top used for bonus games actually look like an old candy-bar phone which is clearly inspired by another mobile legend – the Nokia 3310.
It really is a walk down memory lane in this game which is mostly presented in green monochrome, just like the phones of yesteryear.
The symbols do have color…
…and they are various snakes for high paying and the corresponding eggs for low paying.
The topmost area is a little screen, completely in green, that shows animations based on what’s happening in the game.
It’s an overall very fetching package with a clear art direction. Adding to this is a simple music accompaniment that sounds a lot like those polyphonic ring tones that people were obsessed with in the early 2000s.
Betting Options and Functions
This extended tribute to what many consider the best mobile game of all time is a 5x3 grid with 20 fixed paylines.
To take a spin it’s 20 pence at the low end of the bet and a full 40 on the high end of the spectrum in this slot offering.
There are three different settings for game speed which is appreciated especially because this is a mobile-first slot and allows those who are playing out and about to play faster.
Special Features
There are quite a few features in this game, the first and most important of which is the bonus game. This mode triggers when at least three bonus symbols appear on the reels. Three will award entry into the game but 4 also add a 50x total bet multiplier while 5 bumps that up to a whole 500x.
In the bonus game mode, punters collect pellets (just like 20 years ago in the actual snake game) and each contains either a cash prize, a bonus key or a jackpot coin.
And just to be clear, you can actually control the snake yourself. Yes, it’s basically the whole old game in this new slot.
Fill the jackpot meter and win the jackpot, of course. Another way to win the jackpot is to make the snake as big as it can get.
The bonus meter fills when three keys are collected and when full guarantees that the next pellet will contain a cash prize and then resets.
The mode will end if you reveal a pellet that has a bomb inside it or if you crash the snake.
There is a different point of entry for the game and it’s achieved by collecting SNAKE letters. Each of the letters can appear on reels and add a bit of juice the meters at the very top. Once the entire SNAKE logo lights up, the bonus game begins.
That’s not the end of the features…
…as there are also extra spins that depending on the number of symbols that landed can also come with a 50x or 500x multiplier. All the wins in this mode are further multiplied with random values of between 1x and 10x.
Our Take
We must admit, it was a fun time taking in all the nostalgia and remembering one of the mobile greats. Snake has a special place in many a heart and all of you who remember it will no doubt enjoy this offering by Gluck.
But is this just for people who are nostalgic? Absolutely not, because all the special features, the multipliers, and the jackpot mean there’s a lot to play for even if you’ve never played the original game.
