From humble beginnings in the 1930s with “White Zombie” (the first zombie movie ever made) to the George Romero 1968 classic “Night of the Living Dead” and finally to dominating pop culture through a glut of video games, comics, and TV shows.
Zombies sure have come a long way and through all these years it seems like the appetite we have for these creepy stalkers is equal to their appetite for human brains – that is to say, limitless.
So, if you’re one of these zombie fans constantly looking for another fix, 4thepayer has your back with their 1 Left Alive offering.
Theme
It’s a moonlit night and the scene is full of abandoned houses and run down roads. Oh, and zombies. Lots and lots of them in what many would describe as a “horde”.
The punters are presumably the one left alive that the title refers to and their job is to spin the reels because somehow that might keep the zombies at bay. Don’t analyze it too much since this is a slot game and the objective here is to try to win big.
This kind of theme has been popular in slot offerings for quite some time, as games like Zombies prove but one of the advantages of this particular one is the excellent atmosphere.
There’s creepy music in the background and from time to time there is a lightning strike which reveals just how many zombies there are right behind the reels (answer: quite a lot).
All the symbols are appropriate too…
…with the low paying ones being card numbers with a twist as they all have icons next to them that seem ripped from a zombie video game. Cans of beans, painkillers, flashlights, batteries, bloody scissors, and a baseball bat. All things that would be very handy to have when zombies attack.
The high paying ones are the zombies themselves, appearing as a horde and individually as a woman zombie, man zombie, and a zombie that has fallen and can’t get back up.
Betting Options and Functions
It’s, for the most part, a standard 5x4 set-up where instead of paylines the winning combinations are formed with consecutive symbols on the reels.
But there’s quite a twist.
It comes in the shape of the developer’s innovative gameplay concept called Plus Ways. It offers a win for the first instance of a symbol on each reel and every other instance of that symbol rewards punters with an extra payout. In this way, the actual number of ways to win is actually extended to 32,768.
Worth mentioning…
…is the developer’s mobile-first approach with the game having extra options on mobiles to make the game easier and more fun to use on smartphones and tablets. The Big Reel mode makes the reels bigger and more eye-catching by staking them on top of one another and spinning from right to left.
Special Features
When three zombie hands appear on the reels the extra spin mode begins. Seven spins are awarded with the possibility of retriggering by more zombie hands showing up. A maximum of 700 spins is possible this way.
But there’s more…
…because extra spins are where bloody wilds come into play. First, the players will choose one of four zombies as a target and then every time that zombie shows up on the reels with the fully stacked survivor wild symbol the zombie will turn into a bloody wild. These newly formed wilds will fall down by one position on each spin until dropping off the grid.
Our Take
With so many zombie-themed offerings out there the question is obviously how does this offering measure up?
Quite good actually, because the combination of the excellent atmosphere with engaging gameplay is tough to beat.
Even if you’re not a fan of zombies, it’s still a polished and high-quality game.
