Tens or Better Video Poker is a new style of video poker that makes it easier for the player to win. Much like its counterpart – Jacks or Better, this video poker variant plays almost exactly the same. The one major difference is that you only need a pair of 10s to win, instead of a pair of Jacks.

This version of video poker has a lower variance pay table since more hands will pay out. However, to make up for this, the payouts aren’t not as high as you will find in other video poker machines.

I enjoyed this version since it allows you to stay in the game longer due to it paying out more often. You have to ask yourself what you value more when choosing Tens or Better over other video poker games. Do you prefer going for the big payouts that won’t hit often? Or would you rather win smaller amounts more often?

How to Play 10s or Better Video Poker

Tens or Better is played a standard 52 card deck with no wilds. The start of the hand deals out 5 cards. You can then choose to draw, or stand pat. You can choose to hold all, or some cards. To hold a card, you click the hold button underneath that card.

Once you have decided which cards to hold, click on the draw button to get one draw of new cards. After the draw, all wins are paid out and a new hand can begin.

You also have the option to gamble on any wins. Click on the gamble button to play a hi-lo style game. You will see 5 cards face down to start. The first card is turned over and you have to choose between the 4 remaining face down cards. Try to guess which one will be higher to double your prize.

If you picked a higher value card, you win and can try to double again, or collect your wins. If you lose, you lose all winnings from that round.

Betting Options and Pay Outs

You can play up to 5 credits per hand. Obviously, the more credits you bet, the more you can win. Betting all 5 credits makes you eligible for the top prize of 4,000 credits by making a Royal Flush.

The pay table is top heavy with the higher payouts being rewarded when you make stronger hands. Like most video poker games, you only get your bet back when you make the minimum hand requirement of a pair of 10’s.

The pay outs double up until you reach 4 of a kind. This hand pays 20:1. Making a straight flush pays out 50:1. The top hand (Royal Flush) pays 400:1 when betting the minimum and pays 800:1 if you bet all 5 coins.

Video Poker Goes Back to Basics

Tens or Better is nothing revolutionary, but it is a nice addition to the video poker family. It’s nice to have a video poker game that has less volatility than Jacks or Better style video poker. You may not win as much, but you will win more often which has its own benefits.

This is a very simple game to play and it doesn’t get more straight forward than 10s or Better.
