As a youth you may have played a game called, “Acey-Deucy” or “In-Betweens”. If that rings a bell you already know the basics of Red Dog. The game is played with a single 52 card deck. Two cards are shown face up and if they are not the same value or adjacent cards in rank there will be a spread. For instance if the cards are 3 and 5 there is a spread of 1 as there is only one number between 3 and 5. When you get the first two cards you can Call, which is more or less to pass on raising your bet, and a third card will be dealt. If it falls between it will have been a winning hand.

In the case of a one-card spread as illustrated above the payout on a raised bet would be 5:1 as it would be quite rare to win that bet. If the spread is 4 or more – for instance the first two cards are 5 and 10, then the payout will be even money.
